What 15 Years of Secondhand Shopping Taught Me

In honor of Secondhand September, I’d like to share the lessons I’ve learned from 15 years of being a secondhand shopper.

What started as a broke college student’s way to find affordable clothes became the foundation of my 11-year career in resale — and ultimately led to my current role at the world’s largest consignment company.

The resale industry has grown enormously since I began in 2010. It’s now projected to reach $350 billion by 2028. Along the way, here are the biggest lessons I’ve learned:

1. Patience is Everything

Reflection: Finding the perfect item often takes time. Some of my best discoveries came after weeks, months, or even years of searching — and the joy of discovery is part of the experience. At first, I went three to five times a week (I’ll admit, it was an addiction). Now, I go only a few times a month, and the thrill is in those rare, special finds.

Practical Tip: Set realistic expectations. Don’t rush. Make multiple trips or refresh online listings regularly.

2. Quality Over Quantity

Reflection: It’s tempting to grab everything that’s “cheap,” but one well-made piece lasts longer and brings more satisfaction than a pile of mediocre ones. Early on, I would buy things with all the intention of wearing them — only to donate them six months later.

Practical Tip: Check stitching, fabric, brand, and condition. Be willing to pass on items that don’t meet your standards, even if they’re inexpensive or a designer name.

3. Online vs In-Person Shopping

Reflection: Online shopping offers convenience and access to rare finds, while in-person shopping allows tactile inspection and instant decision-making. I’ve learned to balance both. Personally, I focus on in-store shopping or online platforms with return options — because I’ve lost money to final-sale purchases.

Practical Tip: Use online for specialty items, but don’t underestimate in-store browsing. Ask for measurements, condition photos, and return policies when buying online.

4. Develop a Signature Eye

Reflection: Over time, you learn to spot hidden gems that others might miss. Intuition for style, fit, and quality sharpens with practice — and helps you curate pieces that truly suit your lifestyle.

Practical Tip: Trust your instincts, but double-check details. Keep a running list of brands and styles that consistently deliver for you.

5. Flexibility and Creativity

Reflection: Sometimes items aren’t exactly what you imagined, but with small adjustments or styling, they can become wardrobe favorites. Pinterest is my go-to when I want inspiration on how to style something new-to-me.

Practical Tip: Learn basic alterations. A simple hem, new button, or fresh styling idea can transform a piece.

6. Know Your Budget and Priorities

Reflection: Even secondhand shopping can lead to overspending. I’ve had to find balance between indulging and staying practical.

Practical Tip: Set a spending limit per trip. Prioritize items you truly need or love.

7. Check Labels and Materials

Reflection: Quality brands and natural materials make a huge difference in longevity and comfort.

Practical Tip: Familiarize yourself with reliable fabrics and brands. Wool, cotton, silk, and leather will generally last longer than synthetics.

8. Condition is King

Reflection: Even a fantastic style can’t save an item in poor condition. I’ve walked away from many tempting pieces because of damage or odors.

Practical Tip: Inspect zippers, seams, linings, and buttons carefully. Know your limits on wear and tear.

9. Embrace the Unexpected

Reflection: Some of my favorite finds were complete surprises — colors, patterns, or silhouettes I never thought I’d wear.

Practical Tip: Keep an open mind. Experiment with something unusual — it may become a signature piece.

10. Learn the Community and Culture

Reflection: Secondhand shopping isn’t just about items, it’s about people. I’ve picked up tips from staff, fellow shoppers, and online communities.

Practical Tip: Engage with the community. Ask questions, share insights, and listen for insider tips on restocks or hidden gems.

11. Enjoy the Journey, Not Just the Purchase

Reflection: The real joy is the thrill of discovery and the story behind each item. Shopping secondhand shouldn’t just feed consumerism — it should build a mindful, sustainable, and well-curated wardrobe.

With love,
Shaniqua 💛
